Floors for Portland homes

The floor is the one thing you touch every day.

Hardwood, engineered wood, luxury vinyl plank, laminate and tile, laid on a subfloor we flatten first. So it stays quiet, tight and level for years.

Licensed, bonded, insured.

Straight planks, staggered joints. The everyday classic, and the least waste.

Room by room

The right floor depends on the room.

Water, pets, sun and stairs all change the answer. Here's where we usually start.

Living & bedrooms

Wood shines here.

  • Solid or engineered hardwood
  • Laminate for a tighter budget

Rugs and felt pads keep it looking new.

Kitchen

Spills happen.

  • Luxury vinyl plank
  • Tile
  • Engineered wood with a tough finish

We lay it before or after cabinets, depending on the plan.

Bathroom

Waterproof first.

  • Tile on a proper underlayment
  • Luxury vinyl plank

We skip hardwood in full bathrooms.

Basement

Basements have their own rules.

  • Luxury vinyl plank
  • Engineered wood rated for basements
  • Tile

No solid hardwood on a slab. We test the moisture first.

Stairs & landings

Stairs that match the floor.

  • Hardwood treads
  • Matching stair nosing for vinyl or laminate

Stair trim by our own crew, see finish carpentry.

What's underneath

A good floor is mostly the part you never see.

Squeaks, gaps and cracked tile almost always start below the floor. So that's where we start.

  1. Move and protectFurniture moved, doorways and the rest of the house covered.
  2. Take up the old floorDown to the subfloor. Anything soft or rotten gets fixed now, not covered.
  3. Flatten the subfloorScrews for squeaks, high spots ground, low spots filled. A slab gets a moisture test. The step that matters most
  4. Let the material settleWood sits in your home to match its humidity before it goes down.
  5. Lay itLayout planned from the center of the room, so cuts at the walls stay even.
  6. Trim and transitionsBaseboard, quarter round and thresholds that meet the next room cleanly.
  7. Walk it togetherYou walk every room with us before we call it done.

Quick measure

How much floor do you need?

Slide to your room size. Patterns with angled cuts need extra material, so the order is always more than the room.

A rule of thumb for one rectangular room. Closets, stairs and odd corners change it, so we measure every room before you order. Book a free measure

Questions

What people ask first.

Can the new floor go over my old one?

Sometimes. A floating floor can go over a flat, solid floor. Carpet, soft vinyl and anything uneven come out first. We check on the visit.

Why does the wood sit in my house before you install it?

Wood shrinks and swells with the air around it. Letting it settle in your house first keeps gaps and buckling from showing up later.

How soon can we walk on it?

It depends on the floor. Click-together and nailed floors can usually be walked on the same day. Glue and fresh finish need longer, and we tell you the exact wait for your floor.

Can you do the stairs to match?

Yes. Treads and nosings are made to match the floor, so the stairs don't look like an afterthought.
